February to March 2024, News Around the Country

BREAKING NEWS
Fleet #19 BLSC (Belwood Lake Sailing Club, Fergus, Ontario) has decided to merge with Fleet #3 FYC (Fanshawe Yacht Club, London, Ontario) for 2024. More details to follow in the future. Thank you.

Sad news today. Hans Schaffner hasn’t been well lately and passed away on March 22.  The last time Jim and I saw him was when he and Christel came to see us all on the Dock for Open House last year – FYC’s 70th.
He told us then that he hadn’t been well and shared quietly that Christel was starting to struggle with dementia – though she didn’t believe it. She was very chipper and happy to be out on that beautiful day. We all had some good laughs. They didn’t join us for the cake and coffee at the clubhouse but it was wonderful to see him on the dock again…smiling and enjoying watching the boats sailing around.
I will be writing something up for the FYC website In Memoriam page soon.  He was an amazing Y-Flyer competitor and we have lots of stories about our times racing with him and the kids.  We also had amazing times cruising with him when he took his Tanzer north. What a fun guy.
He did so much for FYC over the years.  He basically built the gazebo and the Sailing School building!! I hope FYC can come up with a permanent tribute to his many, many years of invaluable service to the club.

With great sadness the CYFYRA wishes to pass our condolences to the family with the passing of Hans Schaffner, Y-1796 Fanshawe Yacht Club (FYC Fleet #3), London, Ontario at age 90 March 22, 2024. He was a friendly, always welcoming mainstay at FYC.  An excellent Y-Flyer sailor and teamed with his son were a great spinnaker competitive sailing team. Y-1796 was a beauty, mahogany deck, orange sides and white hull. The boat was showcased at the Toronto boat Show next to a new fibreglass Y-Flyer in 1998. Everyone visiting thought it was fibreglass as well. He will be missed!

January to February 2024, News Around the Country

With deep regret the announcing of John Clark passing on January 19, 2024. Owner of JC Sails, Kingston, Ontario as reported by Sail Canada earlier. 2023 News Wrap up !

Canadian Nationals was hosted by Fleet #17, Sudbury Yacht Club (SYC) July 22-23, 2023. Six Y-Flyers attended the regatta. Robert and Samantha Montgomery Y-2710 (SYC) sailed very well to win the Championship. Richard King and Brianna Ritchie Y-2794 Belwood Lake Sailing Club (BLSC) was second place followed by Colin king and Marla Betts Y-2698 (BLSC) were third.

Ontario Provincials was hosted by Fleet #3, Fanshawe Yacht Club (FYC) London, Ontario September 30 to October 1, 2023. Three Y-Flyers attended. However the weather did not co-operate with extremely light winds. Only one race was completed on Saturday in a drifter won by Richard King Y-2794 (BLSC). Sunday was worse with no wind at all. There was no winner of the Ontario Provincials for 2023 as our CYFYRA Constitution / By-Laws state that three (3) races must be completed to be a championship. Richard King did win the Pumpkin regatta however.

Todd Martin, Eganville, Ontario has been restoring his Father’s Y-Flyer Y-1428. He has purchased plans to complete the reconstruction process on the hull.

Carl Swail, Norway Bay, Quebec Fleet #22 has sold Y-2502 to Johnathan, ‘JJ’ Gooding, Deep River, Ontario in November. Welcome to the CYFYRA. Meanwhile, Carl is not leaving the class as he will be
crewing for Richard Hart Y-2404 at Norway Bay.

On behalf of the CYFYRA Executive and Area Directors we wish all a happy and safe holiday season. See you all on the water in 2024.

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Y1039, aka Battlescar Gigantica. West Hawk Lake, MB

Keen racers will remember being trounced by the big blue hulk at several Western Canadians championships in days of yore.

The fear you felt then was real. For there was a boat that cared nothing for trading paint with those who barged or actually may have had right of way.

The Battlescar played no favourites. It would ram anyone.

Alas, the victim of not one but two full cockpit depth floods in recent years, the Battlescar became more of a hulk than she ever was in her prime.

Stripped naked, she was towed in a semi buoyant state over to the local boat launch this aft where she was yanked onto the heaviest duty trailer we could steal, hauled out whereupon she released half the lake back unto its source, and driven solemnly (read very slowly) down the trans Canada highway in Sunday homeward bound lake traffic to the local “waste transfer facility”… the funeral procession stretching for miles behind, horns blaring surely in sympathy.

At the dump, the Battlescar was rather unceremoniously capsized sideways off the trailer by a team of 20 or so and then we all beat a hasty retreat before Dump Guy asked what the hell we thought we were doing and did we have a permit.

We left her there resting serenely, the collection of neighboring derelict fridges standing guard and bearing testament to her greatness.

Friends and family are joining later this pm for some fellowship (read heavy drinking) in her honour.

Alas, poor Battlescar, we knew yee naught.

January to June, 2022 News Around The Country

Well it has been awhile since we finally reported the Canadian News activity in 2022 as we emerge from the Corvid shadow over the past two years. First on the list of activities for 2022, the Fanshaw Yacht Club (FYC) Fleet #3 London, Ontario is hosting an open regatta June 25-26. Please go on our website
Y-Flyer Canada – Canadian Y-Flyer Yacht Racing Association for info under schedule or contact bobsomek@yahoo.com or call (289) 697-4747. Thank you.

Second, the 2022 Internationals are scheduled July 12-15 at the Saratoga Lake Sailing Club (SLSC) less than three hours south of Montreal, QC. If you are new at racing there is a Challenger Class as well. So don’t be shy, it will be a great experience for you and the beer will be cold. For more information please contact bobsomek@yahoo.com or call (289) 697-4747. Thank you.

Third, we are working on the Ontario Provincial and National Championship regattas that may not happen until early fall. Please be patient. Thank you.

Fourth, Richard Quinlan, our AB/BC Director, is organizing the Western Y-Weekend, the August long weekend (Civic holiday) for western sailors to attend south of Edmonton, AB. For more information please contact Richard at (403) 320-5114. Thank you.

As more club regattas for Y-Flyers are available for 2022, we will be posting as they become available. The CYFYRA appreciates your financial support through 2020 -2021 through this difficult time. Thank you.

October to December, 2021

The summer wave of the Delta variant persisting has caused the sailing and racing venues to be curtailed across Canada this fall. The latest arrival of the Omicron variant in November has thrown another curve ball into the equation. But as sailors say, no matter what wind blows in your face, you just adjust your sails accordingly and sail on. At this time the CYFYRA has developed a tentative racing schedule for 2022 that may require modification as the new year progresses. We will continue to update the news section of the website to keep all members informed of future developments.

Carl Swail our Newsletter Editor now has internet at his cottage in Norway, Quebec. Publication of this will not commence until there is more regatta results and information to share.

In the meantime there have been a few other boat exchanges to report. Warren Flannery BLSC, Fergus, ON has bought Y-2669 in August. Dan Bezaire Renfrew, ON has picked up Y-1054 in September. Henry Saltier Vancouver, BC who summers in Montebello, QC has bought Y-2406 in October. Also Jim Preece from Innisfil, ON has purchased the unfinished frame of Y-2453 in December. Jim is the newest member to the class. Welcome to the CYFYRA.

The Internationals in Saratoga, NY date has been finalized. It will be July 13-15th, 2022. This will all hinge when vehicle border restrictions have been lifted. The 72 hour travel entry into Canada without requiring a COVID-19 test with proof of double vaccination has been rolled back just recently. This may all change again in the coming months.

The CYFYRA wants to thank all those that sent in their memberships for 2020, 2021 and the latest just arrived for 2022. Our 2022 membership form is currently posted on our website under contacts. Thank you all for your continued financial support.

At this time, the CYFYRA Executive and Area Directors wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

January to September, 2021

Unfortunately the 2021 sailing season was much the same as it was in 2020 here in Canada. Officially there were no official  organized regattas across the Canadian landscape due to the Corvid-19 restrictions. Meanwhile on the US side of the border, they have had numerous regattas including the Mid Winters in March hosted by AYC, Ga and the US Nationals hosted by Little Rock, Ar with a sprinkle of smaller ones all with some restrictions. Canadians are still restricted to the US by vehicle for all non essential travel. Canadian vaccinations continue to rise in the country that gives hope that some sense of normal may return in 2022. Carl Swail our Newsletter Editor remains at his cottage in Norway Bay, QC with limited access to the internet limiting communications to our association.

During this period of treading water a number of boats have changed hands and locations. Out west in Alberta in 2020 Y-980 changed ownership as Bob Coutu from Sherwood Park picked up this Edmonton boat. Ron Hammerstedt from Diamond City picked up Y-1091 from the Edmonton area and is in the stages of refurbishing this boat. Jacob Holwerda has moved away from the St. Mary’s Lake Sailing Club, Lethbridge and donated Y-1775 to the club, Fleet #24. Sailing has seen club racing limited to single hand boats. 2021 Phil Harding in Calgary is working on his Y-2811 hull that was part of the keelson frame developed by Ken Peterson of Beloeil, QC. The western guys did have a Western Championship on the long weekend of August with four boats attending south of Edmonton. The St. Mary’s Sailing club closed as of August 9th. The lake is used as a reservoir for the drought stricken farmlands in the area and is now drained.

In the east, in Ontario 2020, Peter Whiting from Amherst Is. donated Y-1433 to the Kingston Marine Museum and sold Y-2706 to Dave Casson’s Fleet #25 LBBC, Kingston. Their activity has been limited as a result of Ontario Sailing Association’s mandate both 2020 and 2021. Belwood Lake Sailing Club Fleet #19 in 2020 and 2021 has had the same restrictions as well with single handed or immediate families sailing Y-Flyers. No regattas were hosted in 2021. In 2020, The Kids and Classic Boatshops Museum, Glen William, ON received Y- 672 donated by Alan Carlisle, QC. that is being refurbished. Fleet #17 in Sudbury was much in the same boat as the other fleets. In 2021 Y-1054 from Arnprior, ON came on the market FREE to a good home. Please see our classified section on our website for more information on this boat. In 2021 Alan Worsley from Sturgeon Lake sold Y-2709 to Ed Hone Hone BLSC, now seven Y-Flyers and counting. Bob Ward from Guelph, ON donated his Y-57 to The Kids and Classics Boatshops Museum that will also be refurbished.

In Quebec, there has been limited activity as well at Norway Bay, QC Fleet #22. Peter Swail has purchased Y-2581 from Jamie Alexander and is sailing her in Montreal, QC. Also three Y-flyers are available for FREE to good homes in the Magog, QC area. Please see our classified section of the website for more information.

Ron Hammerstedt in Diamond City, AB Restoration of Y-1091

Ron Hammerstedt in Diamond City, AB is completing the restoration of Y-1091 that was in need of some TLC. Great job Ron! Richard Quinlan, Area Director for AB and BC, visited Ron Hammerstedt September 28th and took a few pictures of his boat that he has stripped, replaced rotted parts, and is refurbishing. It’s Y 1091, a boat built by John Booth and Sons in the mid-60s, and a twin to my Y 1085. You can see the fixtures he put in place in cockpit to provide a more solid connection between ribs and centreboard trunk. He says they’re much more stable than the little spruce sticks that were in-place vertically (he removed those). I also took a picture looking towards the bow showing the ribs there. In one picture you can see an epoxy fillet we did where the fit of rib to hull plywood was imperfect. All the ribs were loose from hull plywood and we filleted the ones we could get at. I haven’t done that yet on Y 1085.

The last two pictures show the bundle of templates that originated from the Edmonton builder, John Booth, who built many (maybe a hundred?) wooden Y Flyers including Ron’s and mine. The templates are stamped and certified by CYFYRA, and we need to care for and keep track of them. They came to us through John Henderson, then to Paul Johnston, then to Ron Hammerstedt, who repaired one of them and added in a rudder template. If you’d like to look at them to compare to what you have then I could bring up to Calgary fairly soon as I need to go there for a few errands. Then I think Paul may want to use them.

Paul originally found Y 1091 in a shed at Pigeon Lake, and also Bob Somek, our CYFYRA Secretary, as he may not be aware these Alberta templates are still existing, are being cared for, and still in use. These original Booth station templates are a great bonus to the CYFYRA!

October 01 to December 31, 2020

The 2020 year in Canada has been an interesting one as a result of COVID-19. The Canadian – US border has been shut down since March 21st to all non essential travel. The borders between provinces were also closed for a few months to contain infections and lock downs within the provinces occurred from March until May. Sail Canada and Ontario Sailing Association (OSA) cancelled all regattas across the country for the season and issued guidelines to sailing clubs for mask wearing, social distancing and club house activities allowed, washrooms only. Sailing schools were cancelled for the season.

The Belwood Lake Sailing Club (BLSC) Fergus, Ontario Fleet #19 delayed their opening May 1st initially until it could verify what would be allowed, also required permission from the Grande River Conservation Authority. In the meantime Colin King Y-2698 was able to tap into the virtual sailing game to keep the diehards occupied on their computer screens. By the end of June there was timed racing, start line to an island and back. Those boats that required two or more had to be from the same household only. July finally saw some actual racing but with same guidelines as before.

The Sudbury Yacht Club (SYC) Fleet #17 saw only two Y-Flyers in the water this year as reported by Pierre Dignard Y-2782. Norway Bay, Quebec Fleet #22 saw limited sailing as per Carl Swail Y-2502. Richard Quinlan Y-1085 reported much the same from the St. Mary’s Sailing Club, Lethbridge, Alberta Fleet #24. Four Y-Flyers recovered, use to introduce new sailors to Y-Flyers sat idle for the summer.

However, the CYFYRA is optimistic for 2021. Randy Gast, our webmaster has refreshed our website y-flyer.ca. We have received a number of memberships this year despite the lack of activity, thank you. Have a safe holiday season. Cheers!

October 01 to December 31, 2019

Happy New Year from the CYFYRA! I trust the 2020 sailing season upcoming will be a great one. We are currently looking at some new venues for the upcoming sailing season here in Canada. More details will follow early in the new year as they become available.

The Quebec Provincials were held at Norway Bay, QC September 1, 2019 Fleet #22. Three Y-Flyers participated in this regatta with Richard Hart and Carl Swail Y-2404 capturing 1st place. It was an excellent day of sailing, with sunshine, warm temperatures and steady winds over 10 knots that allowed the sailors to complete four excellent races. We also had six daysailors sailing in the regatta that also included three Y-Flyer sailors skippering. Rob and Cara Oakes Y-2569 took the honour in that class. The flooding that occurred in Norway Bay in April, May and early June on the Ottawa River was devastating with sustained flooding for 8 to 10 weeks at record levels ever, 8 to 10 feet above normal. beach and river banks still showed the damage still remaining months later. This delayed a number of Y-Flyers to not make the water this season as more emphasis was on repairing cottages damaged.

Our newest member of the CYFYRA is Bob Coutu from Sherwood Park, AB that has just recently purchased Y-980. Bob’s father back in the 1970’s built a unregistered Y-Flyer. Bob and his brother spent much time on her as teenagers at Grand Lake in Gatineau, QC. Welcome back to the CYFYRA!

The Midwinters is coming up on March 21-22, 2020 at the AYC, Atlanta Yacht Club, Acworth, Ga. So make plans to head south for some good ol’ southern cooking by Lavon Hatcher and her kitchen crew. You will never get hungry. This first regatta of the season is always a lot of fun. For more information contact Nile Hatcher (404) 310-3841 or email nile2762@hotmail.com.

Richard King Y-2794 and Colin King Y-2698 have each purchased new Y-Flyer sails from a Hamilton, ON sail loft. They are taking them to Midwinters in 2020 to try them out. If successful, this will give the CYFYRA an additional Canadian source of sails.

The US Nationals will be hosted by the Saratoga Lake Sailing Club, Saratoga,NY July 13-17 2020 Canadians are welcome to participate in their Junior Nationals July 13-14, Challenger and Senior series commencing July 15-17th. For more information please contact Bob Somek CYFYRA Secretary (289) 320-8149 or email bobsomek@yahoo.com.

The Internationals will be hosted this year by the Americans at Louisville, Ky. September 2-4, 2020. This has just recently been announced. More details to follow as they become available. The CYFYRA will keep you posted, by Newsletter, our Facebook site or on our Canadian website y-flyer.ca

April 01 to September 30, 2019
It has been a late start to the 2019 Canadian Y-Flyer sailing season. In the east, cold wet weather April – June, prolonged flooding on numerous river systems and the Great Lakes, caused many setbacks as these were weeks and months of high water levels. Meanwhile out west, the St. Mary’s Sailing Club, Lethbridge, Alberta had their reservoir still at low levels in the spring, but was up to speed by June.

Latest Active Members include Richard Quinlan Y-1085 Lethbridge, AB., Ed Hone Y-669, Waterloo, Richard King Y-2794 and Colin King Y-2698 Wellesley, Warren Flannery Y-2795 Oakville, Carl Swail Y-2502 Ottawa, Richard Hart Y-2404 Ottawa, Pierre Dignard Y-2782, Brian Martin Y-2776, Robert Montgomery Y-2710 and Bob Robinson Y-2620 Sudbury, Ontario. Crew Members include Jason Houghton, Winnipeg, MB, Marla Betts Wellesley, Jacob Hone, Waterloo, William Hart Guelph, Eric Buckingham Toronto, Daniel Krupin and Connor Watson Sudbury and Andrew Hart Ottawa. Junior Members include Brianna Ritchie and Samantha Montgomery Sudbury and Owen McKenzie Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina.

Bob Somek BLSC headed south June 20th for the Low Country Regatta, Beauforf SC June 22-23rd. Then stuck around for the US Nationals held June 26-28th at the same location the following week. Bob borrowed Y-2636 from Bob Turner the new President of the The American Y-Flyer SAiling Association. Despite two equipment breakdowns, one in each regatta it was still fun. More details in the next upcoming newsletter.

Two teams from BLSC Ed and Jacob Hone Y-2669 and Richard and Colin King Y-2794 raided south of the border to SLSC Saratoga, NY to capture 1st and 3rd at their regatta July 13-14th. Great job guys!

The Ontario Provincials was hosted by Fleet #17 SYC Sudbury, Ontario July 20-21 after being postponed from June 8-9 at BLSC. Thank you Pierre Dignard being able to plug the gap in the regatta schedule. Eight Y-Flyers attended the event with a number of cancellations. BLSC swept the regatta with Ed and Jordon Hone Y-2669 placing first, Bob Somek and Eric Buckingham Y-2758 second with Colin King and Marla Betts Y-2698 third. Thanks SYC for a great time.

The Itaska YC Fleet #18 hosted the Western Championship August 3-4th with 5 Y-Flyers in attendance. A 6th Y-Flyer tried to make the 10 km sail to the event but unfortunately Murray Olsen Y–1097 had an equipment failure on the voyage. Brian and Barb Johnston Y-1727 were first followed by Bob and Kristen Mitchell Y-1043 and third was Richard Quinlan and Ron Hammerstedt Y-1085. Thanks to everyone that participated and acted as support staff.

The Canadian Nationals was hosted by Fleet #17 SYC August 17-18th with 10 Y-Flyers in attendance. Numbers were down due to a number of last minute cancellations. There were no Red Fleet attendees this year. BLSC’s Colin King and Marla Betts Y- 2698 captured the Canadian Cup, Wee Bonnie (Best out of town boat performance), Greenock (Fastest course time) and the Charles William (Winner of 2nd Gold Fleet race) Trophies. BLSC Ed and Jordon Hone Y-2669 were second capturing the Harvey Fenton Trophy and third place was SYC’s Robert and Samantha Montgomery Y-2710 sailing their best ever Nationals. BLSC Richard King and Brianna Ritchie Y-2793 placed fourth winning the Edmonton Trophy (winner of the 1st Gold Fleet race). Thank you Pierre and Lilliane Dignard that organized the regatta and the meals. It was a great time.

The CYFYRA was contacted in late July by Gilbert Barletti in Montreal. His Skene fibreglass Y-2407 that he had sailed years ago at Lac L’Achigan north of Montreal was in storage at Lancaster, Ontario. Wanting the boat go to an active Y-Flyer fleet that he was willing to donate, BLSC’s Colin and Richard King made arrangements to pick her up August 24th. The trip took a bit longer that anticipated, thinking that it was Ancaster, Ontario near Hamilton they were missing the first L….Lancaster, Ontario east of Cornwall, Ontario close to the Quebec provincial border. They left at at 9:00 am returned home at 1:00 am August 25th just a twelve hour drive instead of four. Thank you Gilbert for the donation. She is in good hands now being refurbished.

Forty-five Y-Flyers were on the starting line divided into two groups Gold with thirty-two and Blue with thirteen in each fleet that included five (5) Canadian Skippers and Crews. A month previous, you could actually drive on to the lake bed. However, with the amounts of rain received recently the lake was flooded including the town of Rome downstream. Water almost covered two docks. Parking was limited at the third dock, and needed water taxis to take crews to their boats tied to dock islands. The weather was wet and cool with winds gusting to twenty (20) knots. Sunday races were cancelled due to cold and no wind conditions. The winner of Gold Fleet from AYC was Bryce Dryden and Anna Haddon Y-2762, 2nd was Jeff Rodgers and Lisa Parker Y-2791 with Drew and Andrew Daugherty Y-2798 both from Little Rock, Ar. Thank you to Marg Swail and Jill Alexander for providing the lunches for the regatta. A great time was had by all.

The 2018 Annual General Meeting was held at the Pine Lodge, Norway Bay, Quebec Saturday August 18th. The AGM was well attended with three fleets recorded establishing a quorum. The Financial Report was given by Treasurer Warren Flannery ending Dec 31st 2017, with a loss of $454.80. This was the second year of losses with the similar reasons. This was in part by reduced memberships received and no collection of trophy fees collected at any major regattas for the year and prior year. He moved that that trophy fees be increased for 2019 from $15 per boat to $20 per boat to help recover these costs lost. Also $6000 to be placed in a GIC for one year. Passed. The election of CYFYRA Officers and Area Directors passed, with one change. Carl Swail now takes over the position of VP of Measurement and Restrictions with Marc Ranger retiring. The CYFYRA thanks Marc for his years of service. Under new business, Mid Winters will be again hosted by the Atlanta YC, Acworth, Ga. March 16-17th, 2019. Regarding the use of VHS radios on board boats at the Internationals, raised at the IYFYRU Executive meeting at the end of June, concern was raised on costs and that the number of boats attending Internationals in recent years. This may be premature and does not warrant the costs or needs. To be tabled for further discussion. There was discussion of having the Jr. Nationals reactivated with excess boats in Sudbury, ON available. Also discussion about seminars for racing rules, training and tactics. Full details of the AGM will be reported in our next newsletter soon to be out.

The Quebec Provincials hosted by Norway Bay, QC September 2nd was a no go due to the lack of wind. The fleet was becalmed and was terminated at 3 pm that afternoon.

The Beers Memorial Regatta was hosted by the AYC, Acworth, Ga. October 13-14th. Forty (40) Y-Flyers were on the start line for this event, awesome! Following the event Richard stayed down for a few extra days to help with the C of C (Champion of Champions) preparation. The International Y-Flyer Yacht Racing Union (IYFYRU) had a brief Executive meeting prior to the International regatta dropping the clause “a 30 day payment must be made prior to the regatta to compete.” in it’s Constitution. Also the possibility of using VHS radios for starting on each boat was raised by Paul White, AYC Secretary. This was used at the 2018 Mid Winters in Atlanta, Ga in March. The fleet at Mid Winters was 37 boats in size, though not every boat was equipped with a VHS. This is to assist the starting in large fleets to advise boats being over the starting line in advance of the start. The suggestion was tabled and to be discussed at the CYFYRA AGM in August at the Canadian National Championship in Norway Bay, Quebec.

The Internationals was hosted at Saratoga , NY June 26-28th with fifteen Y-flyers in attendance, five from Canada. Dave Casson from the LBBC Fleet #25, Collins Bay, Ontario dropped off the real Y-2498 mid May for repair, some confusion with boat numbers, and picked up Y-1463 from Ken Peterson at Beloeil, Quebec. The hull has been fully restored and ready to be painted and fitted for sailing. Great job Ken! Dave also returned June 6th with mast, boom and hardware salvage from Y-1707 that Jean-Patrick Masson in the Montreal area had kindly notified the CYFYRA of it’s availability to a good home. Thank you JP!
Ken Peterson, our resident keelson boat builder and repair shop, has noticed on both recently restored Y-1463 and Y-2498 currently under restoration that these two boats have used a hollow pipe to protect the centreboard pin as per the CYFYRA plans. However, there is a problem generated by this design. Corrosion occurs first on the hollow pipe not protected within the centreboard trunk, generally galvanized steel. This eventually over time corrodes, and then corrodes the centreboard pin that could cause eventual failure in loosing the centreboard during sailing. Those with older models are recommended to review their set up, remove this hollow pipe arrangement if installed and check their centreboard pins for corrosion.
Warren Flannery Y-2795 from BLSC attended the Hawg Wild in Little Rock, Ar., with a borrowed US boat and GMSC crew Jack Muhollan Memorial weekend May 26-27th. He placed 7th out of 17 Y-Flyers attending the regatta. Well done Warren!

His friendship with Merrill Callen, then President of the AYFYRA, was a starting point for Canadians to regularly attend Mid Winters after attending the event in 1987. Peter used the trip to advertise the Internationals hosted that year by Lac L’achigan, north of Montreal, Quebec that was well attended by both Canadian and American sailors that summer.
