Born in Nova Scotia, Doug worked his way to London, Ontario where he became active in the Y-Flyer Fleet at Fanshawe Lake, Fleet #3 in the 1960's and at the Fanshawe Yacht Club where he was the former Commodore. He loved Y-Flyers and sailing. Doug built a total of 26 boats in his lifetime, including several Y-Flyers and repairs to several more. He won several Y-Flyer Ontario Provincial and Canadian National Championships during his sailing career. On the water he was a fierce competitor but, always a gentleman and maintained his sense of humour. A memorial service at the Fanshawe Yacht Club was held a week after his passing attended by more than three hundred people. He was very popular. He touched everyone with his presence and will be sorely missed. Doug is now in a safe port and will be the guardian angle watching over the CYFYRA for years to come. |

Note from the CYFYRA President Pierre Dignard
I am very excited about the upcoming sailing season. The CYFYRA has worked very hard to come up with a great competitive sailing schedule for 2011. The first major for the CYFYRA is the Mid Winters at Lake Murray, SC. March 5-6th. We already have four Canadian boats signed up to attend. We hope you can join in the fun as well.
The first major on Canadian soil is the Quebec Provincials to be held at the Gatineau River Yacht Club on July 9-10th. The CYFYRA is very pleased to be returning to this beautiful club on the Gatineau River. I figure a number of the usual suspects will be in attendance along with several new faces. So if you live in Quebec or Ontario plan to attend as everyone is welcome.
The next major of the sailing season will be the Manitoba Championship at Falcon Lake, east of Winnipeg, August 6-7th. This will be very exciting to get both Falcon Lake and West Hawk Yacht Clubs together. In addition there will be three Y’s attending from the Sudbury Yacht Club. It is our intent at this regatta to do some Y-Flyer tuning and the swapping of crews, skippers and boats. This will be fun.
The Junior Nationals will be hosted at the Sudbury Yacht Club August 19th the day before the Canadian Nationals August 20-21st. The reasoning for this is a number of Junior sailors who sail with friends or family will come in a day early to participate. The SYC looks forward to hosting these two great Championships.
The final major of the season will be the Ontario Championship hosted by Norway Bay, Quebec. Fleet #22 will host this party and party it will be! Since the regatta will be sailed on the Ottawa River it is close enough to the Ontario provincial border. A great time it will be so don’t miss it.
See you on the water soon.
Pierre Y-2776
October/November/December 2010
|
With deep regret the CYFYRA announces the passing of Charles Hartleib, Member for Life on November 22nd. Chuck as he was known to everyone, had a double lung transplant operation on November 17th. The operation was successful but he died from complications. Chuck was a very accomplished sailor, winning several Canadian National and Ontario Provincial Championships. He was also the CYFYRA Secretary and Y-Flyer Newsletter Editor from the late 1970's to 1990 and then served again as CYFYRA Treasurer from 1992 until he stepped aside in August 2010 to move to Toronto in anticipation of the upcoming operation.. Chuck was a fierce competitor on the race course. He had a great dry sense of humour that could easily make one laugh. He will be sorely missed at our executive level, on the race course and his on shore persona. The CYFYRA plans to make a trophy dedication in his memory.
Pierre Dignard and Alain Landry Y-2776 won the North Shore Regatta in Sudbury, Ontario on July 17-18th.
The Manitoba Regional Championship did not go off as planned this year in August. We trust that the western sailors will rally around Jamie Richardson’s efforts to get this going forward in 2011.

The 2010 Junior Nationals were not held this year due to lack of Junior sailors available to participate.
Pierre Dignard and Jen Majiski Y-2776 won the SYC Regatta in Sudbury, Ontario on Lake Ramsey September 11-12th.
The Mid Winters with be hosted by the Columbia Sailing Club in Columbia, South Carolina on March 5-6th, 2011. If you want to beat the cold and snow pencil this regatta in your calendar. See ya all there!
The winner of the 2010 CYFYRA Participant Award is a tie this year between Rob Montgomery Y-2710 and Pierre Dignard Y-2776 who competed in the most regattas this year including the Mid Winters, Ontario Provincials, Vale Inco Regatta, Internationals, North Shore Regatta, Canadian Nationals and the SYC Regatta. Congratulations to both of you.
The 2011 CYFYRA Regatta schedule is currently being organized and should be completed soon. It should be published in the January/February 2011 Newsletter.
